Buena Vista University (BVU) has released the name of its 2012 Commencement speaker. The speaker is Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady. Cady, a graduate of both Drake University and Drake Law School was appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court in 1998. He was made Chief Justice in 2011.
While he may have graduated from Drake, BVU has never been far from Justice Cady’s mind.
“I have the greatest admiration for President Moore and Buena Vista University, and am deeply honored to have been asked to present the commencement address this year,” Cady said.
In addition to his work on the Court, Justice Cady has taught at the Fort Dodge site of BVU Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) program for 20 years and has taught 1,500 students in Business Law and Judicial Process. In 2011, he was the adjunct faculty of the year.
“Justice Cady is not only an accomplished jurist, but a dedicated teacher and mentor who connects with his students in ways that inspire them to become engaged and involved and to do their best academic work, it is his passion for teaching and his understanding of students that will make his message to our graduates one they will long remember,” BVU President Fred Moore said.
Cady said that BVU will always hold a special place in his heart.
“Plato said the law is unrivalled in its ability to teach the student. While so true, I have found teaching the law is unrivalled in its ability to reward the teacher. The dedication and support of the BVU staff and students over the years have inspired me to keep teaching, and have made it fun.” Cady said.
Commencement will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, May 26.
