The Buena Vista University (BVU) men’s basketball season ended in disappointment last night after a 71-59 defeat to Washington University (MO). The Beavers were led by Junior Wes Nordquist who finished with a game high 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Freshman Alex Savage finished with nine points, and Senior Doug Bissen chipped in with eight. Washington was led by Dylan Richter who scored 18 points, and Alan Aboona who added 11.
The game was back and forth for much of the first half; neither team had more than a five point lead for the first 11 minutes of the game. Wash U then hit a three pointer which sparked a 9-0 run for the Bears. A shooting foul was called and after some protesting, a technical foul was called on the Beavers. Wash U made all four free throws to extend their lead. The Beavers struggled with turnovers, committing 21 on the day which led to 19 points for the Bears. BVU also struggled from three point territory, hitting 2 of 17 (11%) while Wash U made 10-22 (45.5%).
After half time, the Bears connected on their first three point attempt of the half to take a 15 point lead; a run by the Beavers, capped by Alex Savage’s free throw after a nice drive to the basket, cut the lead to 11. Wash U then went on an 8-0 run and never looked back.
The Beavers finished the season with a 17-11 record. The game was the last for Seniors Doug Bissen, Jeff Janssen, Mike Elming, Joe Bohan, Trent Fisher, Andy Purhmann, and Chase Weaver.
